#proPRIDE Spotlight — Anneke Wieling

We continue our summer proPRIDE series in which we are spotlighting various members of Protiviti’s internal proPRIDE employee networking group and their diverse perspectives. Next up in the series is our Country Market Leader for the Netherlands, Anneke Wieling!

Anneke 1

Anneke is a Managing Director in our Amsterdam office.

  • What is your background and path to Protiviti? “I started my career in 1991 as a financial auditor in Arthur Andersen, and after 5 years left to become a controller in a processed cheese factory.  I became plant manager of that factory, worked at Shell, and then started as a business consultant in Business Performance Improvement and Restructuring for KPMG.  We then started Protiviti in the Netherlands, in 2005, with a group of 8 people, and in 2011 I became the Country Market Lead for the Netherlands.”
  • What inspired you to support diversity and LGBTQIA+ initiatives? “Ever since I was a child I supported Amnesty International, and I am a strong believer in equal rights to everyone. Living in and around Amsterdam, you meet all types of people, and they all add to the beauty of life in their own way, and that should be the starting point for everything. As a woman, I know how it feels to be the minority in business, and I believe that we should be a company which stimulates all individuals to be who they want to be, as society should. Lately there have been some incidents in our country which were the result of less tolerance towards gay people, and that made me decide to become a sponsor of the initiative within Protiviti.”
  • What advice would you give to individuals at Protiviti who may not feel that same confidence in their professional lives? “Be open on your doubts, and ask for advice and coaching.  All our managers and directors are willing to help. I think the Protiviti culture is one of support and inclusion, and I really believe in that as a key factor for our success.”

Abida has been an excellent addition to the Business Performance Improvement (BPI) team in Dallas! Over the past couple of years, she has demonstrated that she is a team player and is very committed to her career development. She consistently seeks more challenging projects and is very capable of stepping into a variety of roles on our BPI engagements. Her promotion to Senior Consultant reflects the quality and value she brings to our solution and the appreciation that our leadership team has of her performance and capabilities. I am excited to have Abida as part of our team and look forward to continuing to support her career development.

#ProtivitiPromos – Meet Kevin!

Twice a year we take some time to celebrate and recognize our colleagues that were recently promoted into a new role. These exciting career milestones are a big part of each employee’s Protiviti journey and a momentous accomplishment. Throughout the remainder of this month, we are going to spotlight a few of these individuals. Next up in our #ProtivitiPromos series is Kevin from Shenzhen, China!

Kevin Prof

Kevin is a newly promoted Senior Consultant in our Shenzhen, China office

  • Years at Protiviti: “Two and a quarter years.”
  • Path to Protiviti: “I started at Protiviti in March 2015 after graduating from The University of Hong Kong with a Masters degree in Engineering.”
  • Current Solution and/or Industry focus: “I’m currently work in Internal Audit Financial Advisory in the Shenzhen office. Since the first day at Protiviti, I’ve been able to gain plenty of opportunities working in different solutions and industries. Most recently, I worked on a Business Performance Improvement project. I believe these experiences will be a strong foundation of deeper understanding in any focused solution and industry.”
  • What do you enjoy about building your career at Protiviti? “I really enjoy how different the projects are here at Protiviti. These different opportunities allow you, and sometimes force you, to learn fast. I also enjoy having the opportunity to work in different cities and collaborate with different kinds of colleagues. This brings new and fresh experiences to the project.”
  • Who has contributed to your success or been a mentor to you during your Protiviti career?  “My career mentor and each engagement manager I have worked under in my previous projects have all been a great help to me. They have helped build me in my early years at Protiviti, especially with the process of developing good working habits. I feel the Shenzhen office has built a very open and sharing culture around senior and upper levels. I can always turn to upper management for help and career advice.”
  • What advice would you give to younger consultants on how to progress their careers?: “It isn’t quite advice, but more what I aim to achieve — always enjoy and keep learning.”

“Talent with unlimited potential”

Protiviti Managing Director and Kevin’s Career Advisor Christina had this to say about Kevin…

“I feel lucky that Kevin joined us after his graduation and even prouder to be his career advisor throughout the last 2+ years. During his time here, he has touched on almost all segments in the Internal Audit Financial Advisory solution and now he has achieved his first career milestone to be an excellent senior consultant. This past year Kevin challenged one of the most important and critical projects in Protiviti China and achieved great success together with his team. Kevin stays curious for new solutions and new industries and possesses courage and confidence to keep exploring. I have to say, you never know the “shape” of his skill set because he is such a quick and brave learner that he grows before someone can clearly define him. His firm and tenacious character is precious not only to his own achievement but also to the spirit of our younger generation consultants. It’s an honor to share in Kevin’s joy over his promotion and I am looking forward to accompanying him on his path of greater success!”

Kevin Fun

Outside of work, Kevin enjoys hanging with friends,  playing sports, reading and relaxing. He is pictured above at the Grand Canyon after attending The Consultant Challenge in 2015!

ProPRIDE Spotlight: Patrick Luong

Last month our Executive Lead of proPRIDE shared his perspective on Pride Month and the importance of an inclusive workforce. He kicked off our summer proPRIDE series in which we are spotlighting various members of Protiviti’s internal proPRIDE employee group and their unique perspectives. Next up in the series is New York Manager and co-founder of proPRIDE, Patrick!

Patrick

Outside of work, Patrick loves to travel! He is pictured above in Bali, Indonesia.

  • What is your background and path to Protiviti? “I was recruited during my penultimate semester at the University of Oklahoma. I majored in Finance and Accounting with a minor in MIS. I started at Protiviti as an Internal Audit Financial Advisory consultant on the technology side. I then went on to spend a year and a half in the same solution but on the Process side. I ultimately switched in to Business Performance Improvement. I love the flexibility this firm has afforded me!”
  • How have you been involved with the LGBTQIA+ community within Protiviti and in your personal life? “As co-founder and Chair of proPRIDE, I have been working with the proPRIDE Board and local chapter co-leads from the beginning. I help plan and implement initiatives such as AIDS Walks and achieving 100% on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index (CEI). Personally, I try to remember the challenges I faced and try my best to pass on the lessons I learned to the LGBTQIA+ individuals I come across when appropriate.”
  • Tell me a story of how you overcame an obstacle due to being LGBTQIA+ and how it has contributed to success in your career? “Being raised with Confucian values, I was taught to seek harmony as much as possible. Although this helped in a lot of areas, it was counterproductive to creating change; because change by definition is disruptive and disharmonious. Seeing that we didn’t have an LGBTQIA+ organization at Protiviti and envisioning how much value and validation that would create for others, I asked the firm for protocols on starting a new employee network group. Working closely with Philip Maziarz, proPRIDE Executive Champion, and David Black, proPRIDE Co-Founder/Vice Chair, we successfully applied for and started proPRIDE in May 2014. I think this experience has greatly shaped and strengthened my professional voice and courage.”
  • What advice would you give to individuals at Protiviti who may not feel that same confidence in their professional lives? “Take your time. We all move at a different pace. There is no right or wrong speed as we all have our different number of internal toll gates to pass through before we are ready to be our full authentic selves.”

#ProtivitiPromos – Meet Salima!

Next up in our #ProtivitiPromos series is Salima from Charlotte!

Salima Prof

Salima is a newly promoted Risk and Compliance Manager in our Charlotte office

  • Years at Protiviti: “2 years in November!”
  • Path to Protiviti: “Prior to Protiviti I worked at Citibank for 4 years in various compliance roles. I was primarily focused on Anti-Money Laundering in Tampa, FL.”
  • Current Solution and/or Industry focus: “I work in Risk and Compliance with a focus on Anti-Money Laundering.”
  • What do you enjoy about building your career at Protiviti? “The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about what I have enjoyed about building my career at Protiviti are the people I have met along the way. I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing people who have all been very encouraging and supportive of my growth and experience at the firm. Additionally, I could not have asked for a better office than the Charlotte office to start my Protiviti career. The sense of family and camaraderie within the Charlotte office makes it so easy to call home. I also enjoy having the opportunity to work with various clients and being able to apply my prior experience to assist with their needs.”
  • Who has contributed to your success or been a mentor to you during your Protiviti career?  “There are so many individuals and leaders within the company that have contributed to my success in one way or another. Being from industry with no experience in consulting, my career advisor Brendan, assisted me in making the transition smoothly. Additionally, my mentor Juan, who has also been my manager on various projects, has put me in positions to succeed by being available to answer questions and providing perspective.”
  • What advice would you give to younger consultants on how to progress their careers?: “My advice to younger consultants is to seek opportunities by reaching out to individuals within the firm. Ask questions about our solutions and seek advice on communicating with clients.”

..So what did career advisor Brendan have to say about Salima?

“Salima came to Protiviti with a solid background in banking and anti-money laundering (AML). Since she started with us, she has proven time and again to be a reliable team leader on demanding AML projects, as well as a trustworthy mentor and source of AML knowledge for the other consultants on her projects. Salima’s promotion to manager is not only well-deserved, but just the beginning of the next phase of her bright career to come.”
